Many, but not all pupils come to the Alexander teacher with specific ailments. The principle of the Alexander Technique is to work on the whole self using FM Alexander’s discovery of ‘Primary Control’ which refers to the importance of the co-ordination of the head, neck and back in order to allow the rest of the body to function effectively.
As you are coming to the Technique as a pupil and not a patient, it helps to have an open and enquiring mind. Alexander believed that we had got into a ‘mechanical habit of thinking’ as well as a mechanical habit of doing. The following questions may help to determine whether the Technique is for you:
Are you interested in discovering how you might be misusing yourself?
Are you willing to change the way you re-act or respond to certain stimuli, if you discover that it’s unhelpful?
Would you like to take more responsibility for your own wellbeing?
